Teen killed in Thursday high-speed crash GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP — A 19-year-old Hudsonville man died Thursday morning after the car he was a passenger in struck a utility pole.
The accident that killed Joshua Craig Harris took place near 44th and Eighth Avenue in Georgetown Township at 6 a.m.
Lt. Steve Kempker of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Harris was a passenger in a 1997 Chevrolet that was heading east on 44th Avenue at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway just west of Eighth Avenue, went into a ditch, struck a power utility pole, and rolled several times before coming to rest on the roof. The Ottawa County Medical Examiner pronounced Harris dead at the scene.
The driver, a 19-year-old Ottawa County resident whose name is not being released pending his arraignment in 58th District Court, was taken to Spectrum Campus in Grand Rapids by North Ottawa Community Hospital paramedics and treated before being released to the custody of the Sheriff's Department. He is being charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, and a violation of a suspended driver's license.
Another passenger in the car, Trevor James Insalaco, whose age and address are unknown, was also taken to Spectrum and treated for injuries.
Witnesses to the early morning crash said the Chevrolet may have been racing a second car, that was described as being dark in color. Witnesses said the second car did not stop at the crash scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Department.
